Red Grouse
The Glorious Twelfth (12th August) sees the opening of the Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) shooting season on the hills of Scotland and moors of northern England.
Driven red grouse shooting, for many is the ultimate sporting experience - red grouse are truly wild, with great flying speed and agility, pursued in stunning scenery, which can be as distracting as the bird itself.
Team Organisation
Red grouse numbers fluctuate from season to season due to a combination of circumstances; overwintering stock quality, levels of the nematode strongyle worm (Trichostrongylus tenuis), heather condition, weather in the breeding period, predation to name but a few.
In good grouse breeding years, it is important to balance grouse numbers by shooting surplus stock, and as importantly, old stock, to leave a young healthy breeding population for the following year.
For this reason, and due to high demand for driven grouse shooting, we organise shooting teams early so that when shooting estates and moors realise a harvestable surplus, from a successful breeding season, we are able to quickly reserve these shooting days for our guests.

Moorland Management
Grouse moors and their management play a key role in producing upland landscapes that preserves and enhance heather-dominated habitats, rich in wildlife and biodiversity.
This habitat enhancement along with predator control, contributes to the conservation of a suite of upland bird species; curlew, lapwing, golden plover, ring ouzel, redshank, red and black grouse.
This form of land use, funded almost exclusively by private shooting investment, delivers high nature conservation value and supports local communities economically, socially and culturally.

The Country Food Trust (CFT)
• Sybarite Sporting supports The Country Food Trust by encouraging a 0.50p (VAT
exempt) donation on every game bird harvested, on the shooting days we organise.
The Country Food Trust is a charity food producer that make top quality protein-based
food that are donated to charities who feed people in need. Our sporting guests’
donations enable those birds harvested, that are not sold directly, to be processed into
nutritious retort pouch meals for vulnerable people.

The British Game Alliance (BGA)
• Sybarite Sporting supports The British Game Alliance by encouraging a 0.50p (VAT
exempt) donation on every game bird harvested, on the shooting days we organise.
The British Game Alliance promotes the consumption of game bird meat, as the official
marketing board for game meat in the UK. Through the BGA 'British Game' assurance
scheme, sporting guests’ can be assured they are participating in a shoot that
adheres to the highest standards, and game bird consumers can be confident to the
provenance of their food.

African Sandgrouse
Sandgrouse (Pterocles spp.) are birds of the Old World deserts, widespread across northern, southern and eastern Africa.
Structurally similar to pigeons with thicker skin and remarkable drinking habits - their plumage, the abdominal feathers, have structural characteristics which are favourable for the uptake of large quantities of water.
Sandgrouse are strong agile flyers, descending upon water in large flock numbers, at high speeds, in the early morning hours and late in the afternoon.
